Holi 2024 Celebrations and Customs in India: Embracing Traditions

Holi 2024 Celebrations:

In 2024, Holi is slated for celebration on the 25th of March across the nation. Traditionally, Holi festivities span 2 days – the 24th of March marks Holika Dahan, while the 25th of March is dedicated to vibrant color celebrations. However, within various regions of India, unique customs and traditions add layers of significance to the festival. In the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, for instance, Holi is deeply intertwined with the legends of Lord Krishna, rendering the celebrations especially resonant. Among the Braj locales of Mathura, Vrindavan, Gowardhan, Gokul, Nandagaon, and Barsana, Holi rituals assume exceptional prominence.

Notably, Barsana hosts the renowned Lathmar Holi, a spectacle that garners global attention. In Braj, the Holi festivities extend across 40 days, commencing with the Barsana Laddu Holi and culminating in the Lathmar Holi.

Preparations for Holi in the Braj region commence with Phulera Dooj, observed on the second day of the waxing phase of the Phalgun month. This day holds significance as it is believed that Lord Shri Krishna engages in flower-adorned Holi celebrations. Holika Dahan, a pivotal ritual, is slated for the 24th of March this year. Typically held during an auspicious time devoid of Bhadra, this year’s Holika Dahan will be delayed due to the Bhadra, taking place late into the night.

Here’s a glimpse into the Holi 2024 schedule in Mathura, Vrindavan, and Barsana:

  • 17th March 2024: Phag Invitational Festival and Laddu Holi at Radha Rani Temple, Barsana
  • 18th March 2024: Lathmar Holi at Radha Rani Temple, Barsana

Regarding the date of Holi for 2024, there has been some confusion among people. As per the Hindu calendar, Phalgun Purnima Tithi begins on March 24 at 9:54 am and concludes on March 25 at 12:29 pm. Consequently, Holika Dahan will occur on Sunday, March 24, followed by colorful Holi celebrations on March 25. The auspicious time for Holika Dahan falls on Monday, 25th March, between 11:12 pm to 12:07 pm.

Holika Dahan Puja Method:

Before Holika Dahan, Holika Maa is revered with a ritualistic puja. Devotees wake before sunrise, don clean attire after bathing, and proceed to the Holika Dahan site in the evening. Various offerings including cow dung cake garlands, Roli, Akshat, fruits, flowers, turmeric, moong, jaggery, gulal, colors, Satnaja, wheat earrings, sugarcane, and gram are presented. Following circumambulation around Holika, water is offered, and prayers for happiness and prosperity are recited. During Holika Dahan, barley or Akshat is offered to the fire, and the roasted grains are distributed as Prasad.

Lunar Eclipse on Holi (Chandra Grahan 2024):

This year, Holi coincides with the occurrence of a lunar eclipse, adding an unusual dimension to the festivities. Scheduled for Monday, March 25, the eclipse will transpire in Virgo, lasting from 10:24 am to 03:01 pm. Although not visible in India, the eclipse will be observed from various parts of the world, including North-East Asia, Europe, Australia, America, Japan, Russia, Ireland, England, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Pacific, Atlantic, and the Arctic Ocean. Fortunately, its Sutak period will not affect worship or auspicious activities in India.
